Rewarding Pursuits

by Joy Altimare, Iris House Board Member

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and to impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” - Woodrow Wilson

What better way to begin 2012 than by living closely to these inspiring words from Woodrow Wilson.  Since we’re past the holidays, where everyone from Hollywood to local celebrities shows up to homeless shelters to serve dinner (and the photo op), now is the time we see real acts of kindness.  The real work of altruism begins as we work to enrich and help those in need through the countless hours of volunteerism and support through generous donations.  In the spirit of resolution-fueled good deeds, let’s reflect on how we can make 2012 better than 2011.  Let’s encourage one another to do better at giving more to those who need it most – in whatever way possible.

Helping others is a great way to gain new insights about the world, and make a difference.   You improve neighborhoods.  You inspire and enrich lives.  But, you also become truly blessed by the people you meet along the way and the happy faces you serve.  At the end of the day, it becomes a more rewarding experience for you as volunteer and you reap the unlimited benefits in your spirit and your soul.

We at Iris House strive to provide comprehensive services and advocacy for women, families and communities infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS.  Simultaneously, we provide prevention and education services for our client and at-risk communities.  With your help, we can continue to support our 3 offices that truly make a difference in the lives of the communities we serve.

If you want to join us in this rewarding pursuit and you’re interested in starting the year off in the spirit of giving and helping others, contact the Iris House at www.irishouse.org for more details. We can help make volunteering and donating easy.

Happy New Year!
