Iris House Celebrates Cinco de Mayo by collaborating
with local organizations and business in New York City.
Tacos and Testing, Get Tested!
May 2nd- May 12th, 2023
New York, New York, May 2nd through May 12th, 2023- Iris House announces its seventh annual Tacos and Testing, Get Tested! public health awareness campaign aimed at promoting HIV, STI and Hepatitis C testing within the Mexican/Latino immigrant communities in NYC and New Jersey.
Tacos and Testing, Get Tested! is a community outreach initiative for the Mexican/Latino immigrant population led by Iris House, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in New York through its Ventanilla de Salud; and a coalition of 20 health agencies, community organizations and restaurants aimed to motivate people to take preventive health screenings during this critical time, including HIV testing. Participants being tested, via the mobile units or at participating community organizations, will be given a voucher for a taco and/or discounts at participating restaurants.
In 2021, the New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) “reported that immigrant New Yorkers make up 40% of the City’s total population and 60% of New Yorkers are immigrants or children of immigrants”. From 2017-2021 the rate of HIV diagnosis about those born in Mexico and Central America was 27/100,000 which is almost 150% the rate across the general NYC population. According to NYC data reports, “multiple NYC neighborhoods have over 10% of their HIV diagnoses in 2021 from individuals born in Mexico, Central American or South America, with the highest being 27% in West Queens”.
"This year's Tacos and Testing event is even more critical as we have seen the rise in migrants into NYC. Our organizations have personally had to step up our resources to meet the demands of those in need. This testing and outreach initiative will link our Mexican, Central American and other immigrant communities to HIV and STI testing services while connecting them with community groups from around the city and in New Jersey. We thank all of our partner organizations for their work to meet the needs of the most vulnerable." Ingrid Floyd, Executive Director, Iris House.
The event will take place over several days beginning Tuesday, May 2nd through Friday, May 12th 2023, in the five boroughs of New York City and in Union County, New Jersey. A list of the testing event sites, days and times can be found on our website: www.irishouse.org.
